FAQs

  • 1. How often should I visit my dentist?

We strongly recommend patients undergo at least an annual dental assessment and clean. This helps to maintain oral hygiene and gives our dentists adequate time to identify any problems before they escalate into bigger (and more costly) issues.

  • 2. Why are regular dental assessments so important?

Dental assessments provide your dental practitioner with an opportunity to evaluate your oral hygiene and clean your teeth. It also gives them a chance to detect problems as early as possible. A simple filling at the right time (or identifying a cavity early) could save you from a root canal or tooth extraction down the track.

  • 3. What happens during a dental assessment?

You can expect a typical oral examination involving a careful inspection of your mouth, teeth and gums. Your dentist will be looking for any signs of tooth decay and cavities, loose or broken teeth, damaged tooth fillings or gum disease. This is why a regular dental visit is a necessary part of preventative dental care.

  • 4. What are signs of having unhealthy teeth?

Chipped, cracked or discoloured teeth;-, bleeding gums; bad breath; and tooth or jaw pain can all be indicators of unhealthy teeth. If you are experiencing any of these signs we highly recommend that you arrange a dental assessment with us so we can identify and address the cause.

  • 5. Why do my teeth appear to be yellow?

Discoloured or yellowed teeth can be the straightforward result of maturity; poor oral hygiene; or can simply be due to using certain products that stain the teeth. Some of the leading offenders include coffee, tea, red wine, antibiotics and tobacco. If you’re concerned, call us today to arrange a consultation and learn about tooth whitening procedures.

  • 6. How can I improve my oral hygiene?

In order to keep your teeth and gums healthy, we encourage daily flossing and twice-daily brushing to maintain proper hygiene. Using mouthwashes, cleaning your tongue and eating a healthy diet (limiting sugary food, soft/acidic drinks) can also help.

  • 7. Why is my tooth sore?

Toothache is the human body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. It could be a cracked tooth, a dental cavity, an exposed tooth root, infection or even gum disease. We recommend that you schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible if you happen to be experiencing tooth pain.

  • 8. What are your payment options?

We accept several payment options including cash, all credit cards, EFTPOS, cheques and Zip Pay/Money.

  • 9. Do you accept HICAPS payments?

Yes, we accept ALL Health Fund Cards. We are Participating Providers for HBF and are BUPA Platinum Providers.

  • 10. Do you accept new DVA patients?

DVA patients (Veterans’ Affairs) are most welcome at Silas St Dental when they present with a valid DVA card.

  • 11. Do whitening toothpastes work?

Whitening toothpastes contain abrasives that remove stains on the enamel which discolour teeth. They do not actually change the colour of teeth.
